need help to setup a lan connection between 2 computers

can someone help me step by step to connect my laptop to my pc so i can take some files ? please i have tried all kind of stuff but to no result
 
Can you tell me what you've done already?? How are the machines set up (wired or wireless)?

For a computer to computer connection you need a crossover RJ45 cable. For a computer to router connection you need a patch RJ45 cable.

It might help to know what operating systems are on the machine too :-)
