I'm building a new computer and I want to move my current HDDs over to it. I'd like to keep all of my programs and files but I also want to reformat my bootdrive and re-install windows. Is their a way I can save all of my user settings, files, and programs (to another drive?) and then load them back onto the drive after I re-install windows?

heya

I know that you can create a backup clone of a drive but that would not solve the problem that you are talking about. You would need to perhaps slipstream your Windows XP installation disk. Other than that, all I can see you could do is to simply backup all the settings seperately and apply them later.

slipstream?

I know you can slipstream service packs and hotfixes but can you do this with program settings? Could I maybe backup certain parts of my registry (the software profiles) and not others (the hardware profiles)? Or is it pretty much hopeless?

i would just transfer files to another hard drive/partition i dont know of a way to keep your windows settings, is there any reason u want to reinstal windows? because the only reason that i reinstall windows is to get rid of those settings. if your worried about the hard ware settings interfering with your new hardware they shouldnt, your computer should just make new settings for your new hardware. ;)

thats not what he is asking for

I know how to transfer the actual programs, but what I want to know is how to transfer the setting that tell the computer that they are installed. These settings are stored in the registry. Unfortunately the same section that stores software profiles also stores hardware profiles. So if I just backup the registry section and import it onto the new computer its not going to work. The software profiles will be fine but none of the hardware profiles will match the actual hardware. I've lost a lot of the cd's for these programs so I can't just re-install them. I was hoping there was some way to work around it or a program that does it for you.
