I was looking for new dectop pc , since my old laptop , well .... is old , and i really dont like using wife's macbook pro (I guess have something against mac os). So my bro purchased new apple desktop and gave me his EL1331-05 emachines. hard drive went out on it , so i have to fix that , I was thinking I'll add more RAM and video , need video card with HDMI out. So since I'm kinda new to updating PC's , i figured all ask pros : what kind of video card , hard drive , ram i need and how it it going to work out since case is so small and u cant really add much. Thank you in advance :)

What programs are you hoping to run on this machine? This E-Machine computer has a slower first generation Athlon Dual-Core processor, likely no PCI Express slot for a video card and a poor quality power supply. It would be okay for browsing the Internet and word processing and older legacy video games.

Hard drives are really expensive right now. If you want a refurbished hard drive you can find a 160 gigabyte Serial ATA hard drive here for $50 that has a 90-day warranty:

(Hopefully he comes back to the forums to check on his post.)

Im back , I think ill be here for a while too :) because im planning to learn how to build my custom PC.

As emachines go , all i really need is to fix the hard drive so i can use it , till i decide to build one , of course it would be nice to make the computer better , more video and ram , I kinda figured that I wont be able to upgrade video card. The obly game I play is Eve Online , it isnt really demanding.

160gb hard drive is kinda too small , how much max will it take ?

well i think it will, if your Motherboard supports SATA...
theres just SATA and IDE, so it shouldn't be too hard to find the right one (and by googling i didn't really find what i was searching for, but it seems to Support SATA) :P
im not anykinda geek, but still trying to help you :D

The hard drive you are looking at will work with the system you have now.

The Athlon 2850e processor is a single-core processor. In simple terms that means it doesn't have much processing power. I think the only part you will be upgrade your system with is the hard drive you are buying.

A Windows installation disk is going to cost you at least $70. I would suggest getting a Linux Ubuntu operating system installed on the machine. I would go with Ubuntu version 10.04 32-bit, but you won't be able to play Eve online with it.

You will want Ubuntu version 10.04 rather than version 11.10. Version 11.10 has a lot of bugs they are still working out.

You can download the file to make an installation disk here:

http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download

If you want me to I can ship you an Ubuntu installation disk for $1.

Edit: I was just reviewing the recommended specifications for Eve Online. It doesn't look like the Athlon 2850e processor meets the recommended specifications for the game.

hmmmm.... and i thought that installing new hard drive i would be able , use serial for windows from the other hard drive, that's kinda sux.

Thanks for a link , if i wont be able to burn it ill get it from you , but i dont think i should have issues .

How difficult is it to learn Linux (how much different is it vs. Windows and Mac)

The operating system is not real complex. If you have any questions you can ask in the Operating System part of these forums. There are a lot of people with Ubuntu experience on these forums.
