Need help....which SONY VAIO??

I've spend now couple of weeks trying to decide which SONY VAIO i should buy. It seems like there is no perfect fit for me. Iam an engineering student going into my third year. So far I know that I want a 14"-15.4" screen. I was looking at the SONY VAIO FJ model: Pentium M (1.83GHZ, 100GB Hard drive, 1GB memory), nice looking laptop but my issue with it is the fact that it is a pentium M and has no graphics card. My question: Do I really need a CORE DUO processor and a graphics card. I mean I will be playing games such as Age of Empires 3, the new Command of Conquer games and of course alot of CS. Iam worried that the FJ model wont be able to handle these games. Another model I looked was the FE but only configured it to about $1700 on sony's website, has the following: CORE DUO (1.83GHz, 80GB Hard Drive, 1GB memory, Nvidia 7600). These specs are good but this is a little pricey. This computer is no good in the store. Should I buy the FJ model??

If anybody with these models or experience with these models could help I would appreciate it greatly.

Thank YOu

The FE definitly looks like a sweet computer, it will play games very nicely. For AoE 3 and the new C&C games you will probably want Core Duo and a nice graphics card.

If you like FJ, but like the FE, but it's quite out of reach due to price. How about going down the middle? Try the FS, I've always liked the FS series- great build quality, excellent styling. Not too heavy, not too big, not too small, and you can customize it with a Go6400. Not too powerful, but a lot better than basic graphics.

vaio

i bought a fs515e lovely laptop but prob not up to the spec you are looking for. when looking at laptops i did notice acer had some very powerful dual core systems at good prices and i was either going to buy one of them or the vaio and i chose the vaio cause it was on offer at the time. notebookforums has a good link somewhere to pics of sony laptops

That's not a bad idea.....going with the FS- model. It will end to be about $200- $300 cheaper. But when configured......it only has a pentium M (1.73 or 1.83, Nvidia 6400, 80Gb HD, 1 GB Memory)....You guys think that it is worth the extra money to have a core duo (1.83) and the nicer graphics card Nvidia 7600 with the FE model? Do i really need a core due for gaming? And also just to be sure, is the FE model , according to my specs, a really good laptop in terms or performance, gaming, and everything else. For some reason Iam not comfortable paying $1700 for the FE. I mean I know that it is a sony which means iam paying $200-$300 more just for the brand but i really like their looks and its hard to get away from them. really want a sony. So if the FE is really worth it according to you guys than i just might pull it out.

thank you all for taking time to respond.

DON'T GET A SONY VAIO - mine packed up after 18 months; my mate bought two of them, one lasted just over a year, the other two weeks. Their customer support is appalling as well...

As much as I can see your pain with sony, it sounds like you just got a few lemons. Many people in my faimily have had VAIOs, laptops and desktops, and they all work fine. My parents 4 year old computer is a $2000 vaio they bought in September 2006, and it keeps going strong. Sony also gets very good reviews, actually the best, in consumer reports for reliability ratings on laptops.

PC Connection

I just found a website pcconnection.com where I can buy the same configured Sony Vaio FE model for $1600 where as I pay close to $1800 at sonystyle.com..........my question: Can I trust this website? Are their any other website where I can get the same vaio for cheaper? It just seems like I can't trust these kind of website except the official sony website, but I might be wrong? If anybody has experience ordering from these website please let me know how it went? how is the product? did you get ripped of?

thanks for your help.

I've never personally used Pcconnection, but I have heard about it, and it's supposedly fine.

DELL vs. SONY VAIO

you guys think I should just go with Dell, have the better spec if not better and all for less money? Not sure about a Dell though, Sony looks much cooler. Is sony more reliable than a DELL? Are SONY comp. generaly better than DELL's? Want to buy laptop very soon....advice required....

thank you for any advice.

It is kind of hard to compare what's better on this. They both use about the same parts, and reliability is about the same. I would never base my purchasing decisions on looks alone, I'd always go for what I can get better speed for cheaper. There are both dells and sony laptops in my family, and I can say I like my brother's Dell the best. However, that may be because the Sony's that my family has are a bit on the older side. The Dell is just a month old.

I would go with the Sony. I've had a Vaio desktop for almost a year now and its nothing but a pleasure to use. Their laptops are good from what I've heard too. Not a single company out there is perfect so a few bad reports here and there shouldn't mean much. Their website has a good support area too.
For playing games, a duo processor won't be much better than a single core. Duos really only help for multi-tasking. A good graphics card is a must for any gaming computer.
