Need help with a install of OS

The answer to that one is simple. I'ev pulled eMachines apart to find out why things wouldn't run or why a single drive wasn't detected by the XP installer. Set as master at the end or slave in the middle "failed" everytime. Once the WD model that came with the system(note "came with" and not just any WD) was set to the CS jumper setting WA LAA! XP went right on! The drive wasn't even seen on the post screen until then.

You would like Vista now since memtest is now included as an option in the start screen! Microsoft wants to get "customer friendly"? :P When you boot from the installation disk that is one of the options seen if you click on the repair link instead of the install now at the bottom of that screen.

I'm not saying that it could not be a memory problem, but why can I install Windows 98 on it and everything works fine?

If you go over 512mb total for memory you will have to perform a tweak on the autoexec.bat file created by 98 for getting the older version installed and running. I'm sure you would rather see XP for sure there. But don't rule a flaky bios or drive since XP should install easier then 98.

The best thing to do if you can install Windows 98 would be to put that on, and run a memory test with one of the apps listed in this thread.

Ordering new memory would work too..

I had this happen with one of my older computers. It turned out to be the cd drive though. Even with the faulty cd drive i could install 98 lmao...

I think there is even a memory test that you can run in DOS, or from a LINUX cd, I know a bootable Knoppix CD have a memtest program.
