The answer to that one is simple. I'ev pulled eMachines apart to find out why things wouldn't run or why a single drive wasn't detected by the XP installer. Set as master at the end or slave in the middle "failed" everytime. Once the WD model that came with the system(note "came with" and not just any WD) was set to the CS jumper setting WA LAA! XP went right on! The drive wasn't even seen on the post screen until then.

When you boot from the installation disk that is one of the options seen if you click on the repair link instead of the install now at the bottom of that screen.
