need help with adding 2nd HD

I am adding a WD 500GB as a second harddrive but its an OEM with no instructions and im not sure about the jumper settings..My computer has XP Home and everything is SATA....I already have screws,cables,and an extra jumper and I know to use Windows to format but I heard something about setting a jumper for SATA 150 MB/s only or something like that...But I also heard thats for older machines only...My computer is a Dell Dimension about Two 1/2 years old....Sorry I' so dumb...I would appreciate any help....Thanks

Don't put any jumper on. Just attach the SATA and power connections. If it is a SATA300 drive it should still work on SATA150.

I have a SATA II drive, but my mobo only supports SATA 1.5GB/s...you don't need any jumpers or anything, just plug it in like normal, and it will work fine.

Cause:
Our Second Generation Serial ATA hard drives use autospeed negotiation. This enables our Second Generation Serial ATA hard drives to automatically detect the motherboard data transfer rate, making it backward compatible with First Generation Serial ATA data transfer rates. However, because this technology is so new, some older First Generation Serial ATA controllers are unable to support autospeed negotiation and cannot recognize the drive. This “drive not detected” condition occurs when a chipset is incapable of correctly negotiating the data transfer speed with a Second Generation Serial ATA hard drive.

If the OPT1 jumper setting does not resolve the issue, please contact Western Digital Support for further troubleshooting.
