Need Help with AGP slot...Nvidia 6600GT Not Working

I posted before about having trouble with a Mad Dog Nvidia FX5200 card. I just got the 6600Gt and still nothing.

it was suggested that maybe the AGP specs don't mesh. I am now running a Geforce 2 mmx400 AGP 4x card (from an old system) just fine.

Can someone help please. I originally had the FX5200 installed and it worked great for about 3 wks. Then after I installed a tetris game and rebooted, something "burned" up. I could smell an odor. I immediately pulled the plug and swapped out the video card. Since it booted up no prob with the GeForce 2...I just figured it was the video card.

I have tried 2 other Mad Dog FX5200's and nothing.

I am running a 865 PERL mobo
Antec 400W
P4 3.0

I checked the specs for the AGP slot on intel.com. Everything seems to match up.

If it's a voltage problem...what do I do?

I wanted a decent card for TV tuner/DVR capabilities.

This is what Intel.com says about the mobo. I can't seem to figure out whether the 6600GT is compatible???

What add-in AGP cards can be used?
The D865PERL AGP socket is keyed for Universal 0.8 V AGP cards that comply with the AGP 3.0 specification or 1.5 V AGP cards that comply with the AGP 2.0 specification.
The AGP connector supports 8x, 4x AGP 3.0 add-in cards operating at 0.8V, or 4x, 1x AGP 2.0 add-in cards operating at 1.5V.
Note: There is no support for AGP 2x operation or legacy 3.3V AGP cards.

the 6600GT is a 0.8V (AGP8x) so yes it's compatible, did you connect the extra power for the 6600GT?

Since it booted up no prob with the GeForce 2...I just figured it was the video card.
GFX5200s arent known for their heat output.... did you do a burn in test after swapping?

I checked the specs for the AGP slot on intel.com. Everything seems to match up
For the record, what AGP spec does the i865PERL use (i presume 0.8v but just to make sure)

If it's a voltage problem...what do I do?
You can try adjusting the voltage pots on the PSU if you've got them, or alleviating the load on the molex powering the 66GT ... other than that, a new PSU.

yes I did.
What else is that rail connected to?

Burn in test? Not sure what that is, but my computer wouldn't boot at all. I didn't do anything with the original FX5200. It was a new build and seemed to work fine.

"rail" - not familiar with the term, but taking it out of context I assume you mean the power the board is connected to. I think that it is connected to the same "rail" as hard drives (2) and 2 fans. I can try to swtich things around to lessen the load.

According to Intel:

You suggest a new power supply...do you think the Antec 400W True Power is insufficiant?

The 400 watt unit you have should be sufficant as i am using a x800 ati card without a problem , but it only uses 1 molex connector, (does the 6600 use 1 or 2 connectors?)

It only uses 1. The 6800Xt uses 2.

I went back in and changed the power around so it would be the only one on 1 molex - connected directly back to the power supply. Still nothing.

Again, the 4x AGP GeForce 2 card is working fine.

I am very frustrated as having the backup card in this machine, renders my business machine useless (no video card!).

I have emailed intel tech and PNY tech (manufacturer of 6600GT). Intel gave me the basic try all this stuff first email. Including swapping out the processor and whatnot...funny...I don't have spare processors laying around!

Anyways...I agree about the power. I am not running anything major...no RAID or anything.

i'm open to sugestions. I havn't had this type of problem before with graphic cards so any help and i'll try and remember it for future refeance.

What I meant was that whe you popped the GF2 ... did you do some testing to make sure it was indeed just the video card that was giving you problems as opposed to the video card and something else like RAM or bad power etc

6800Xt uses 2.
Huh?

Yes I did mean 'rail' as you interpreted it :) and it would be a good thing just to try to swap them around

You simply said Antec 400W .... now that i know its the TruePower series, that's not really a concern anymore

From the installation manual, it looked like you had to make 2 connections to the 6800Xt. That's all I meant.

I will try to reseat the Ram and stuff. Will that make much difference b/w the 2 cards? Working vs not-working?

I am just stumped. Everything worked fine with the FX 5200 and then the monitor went haywire and the connection died. Not to mention something not smelling right. It all happened after an installation of a Tetris game - which has since been unistalled. I don't know if there is any connection, but I want to make sure you all have all the details. Sometimes the smallest thing makes the biggest difference.

If the AGP slot fried - it wouldn't work with any card right?

How do you bump these threads? I am still trying to figure this AGP prob out. Anyone think I need to RMA my motherboard?

I dunon what manual you're reading but there's no such card as the 6800xt

Most likely but when you start dealing with fried parts, anything can happen

How do you bump these threads?
By waiting a few days, we dont live here ... eventually someone will get to it :)

Anyone think I need to RMA my motherboard?
Me.

I meant the 6800GT. Lack of coffee...sorry

I know you don't "live" here. I also know that after awhile sometimes these threads get lost in the shuffle and I did read somewhere where you suggested someone bump a thread rather than re-post???

At any rate, I think I need to RMA the motherboard too. I guess I just want to make sure it's compatible with 8x cards. Intel support isn't so easy to access.

Does anyone have any insight to the compatibility of the 865 PERL mobo and 6600GT card? From everything I've read - it should be a no-brainer....

Ya no worries about the bumping ... it's only when people wait a few minutes or hours before bumping.

It should be a no-brainer :)

I RMA'd it thru Newegg. I should get something by next week. Hopefully this will do it. Can't afford to be done much longer:(

Thanks for all of the suggestions

what agp version did the card have, and what agp version did ur mobo have....hence 1.0 2.0 3.0 and i think that's all and that COULD be ur issue
the PERL is AGP2.0/3.0 compliant and the 6600GT is a 3.0
