Need help with choosing a Laptop

Mk i'm in the market of buying a new laptop for college this year. I've been surfing newegg.com and i am trying to make sure i get a laptop that meets my needs with both everyday tasks and gaming (i'm looking forward to games like CIV 5 and Diablo 3, nothing super high end, i have a PS3 for that), But also is going to be a laptop that has a long life cycle.

I'm willing to spend up to 900 dollars for a good laptop that will last me a couple years.

Here are the 2 that i have come down to

Newegg.com - Gateway NV7901u NoteBook Intel Core i5 430M(2.26GHz) 17.3" 4GB Memory DDR3 1066 500GB HDD 5400rpm DVD Super Multi ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650

Newegg.com - HP Pavilion dv6-2180us NoteBook AMD Turion II Ultra M620(2.5GHz) 15.6" 6GB Memory 500GB HDD 7200rpm DVD Super Multi ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650

I'm really torn because i am not sure of Gateway's reliability. I know HP has always been a good brand (at least to me it has been) but i was reading through many of the reviews posted for both computers. (all of which have been pretty good)

The thing that freaks me out about the HP is that some reviewers are saying that it tends to get warm after a while. Which as i'm sure as you all know is a horrible thing to hear when trying to buy a long lasting electronic device.

And the thing that freaks me out about Gateway is their credibility. I know Gateway is now an ACER company. But i do not know much about Acer either. But from what i read of the reviews the computer has been running great, nice and cool as well. But you guys know how those reviews are often posted shortly after a buyer owns the product. So i'm still concerned about longevity.

The HP is a 15.6 Inch and the Gateway is a 17 inch. Which i think may be a reason why the gateway is more efficient at cooling.

I'm just looking for your opinions they are much appreciated! Also if you guys have any other laptops you would recommend please post them!

^^ That is what is just going through my head. I am not the most knowledgeable tech guy out there at all, which is why i came to you guys :)

Why a laptop? you move around a lot? a desktop would be better for gaming IMHO. 900 dollars will go further on a desktop than a laptop.

This is speaking custom builds of course.

Yeah, the i5 is definitely faster than the Turion. Your choices are really open-ended. If you narrow them down according to what specs you'd like in your laptop, it'd be a lot easier to find a suitable laptop for you.

I love my gateway, All ways had good luck with them

Same with HP, Both really great in my opnion.

I would choose ether brand, go with Intel, And just make sure it has 4gb ram, non-integrated gpu, and dual core 2.4ghz our faster, win 7 x64 and you will be fine.
