Need help with laptop problem!

Maybe you should look around on the net and make sure that the motherboard in your laptop can handle that size of a drive.
what size is it?

I put a new Toshiba hard disk in my Sony Vaio pcg-z505js and it doesn't see it. How do I fix this problem?
If it's a brand new drive, you may need to set up a partition before your computer can see it.

Ok, pretty much I can do barely anything with the computer. When I turn it on and have the a drive connected with a Windows 98 startup disk, the screen says

Starting...

A:\>

A:\>

So what do I do from here? Is there anything else I should replace on the computer(without buying a new laptop altogether :) )? Thanks.

Wait a minute, so you're replacing your old HD with this one? So that means you've got no operating system on this, right? What you'll have to do is go into bios, make sure it's booting off the CD drive, place your Windows CD in the CD drive and then start the install.

also , while you are in the bios , see if the hd is being detected. Also you more than likely will have to format the HD, Unless you are using a restore cd from your manufacturer. If you are using a MS win 98 cd, there is no option to format the hd on the cd. Also make sure you have a cd key if it is a cd from Microsft, the key may be on the cd envelope or on the bottom of the notebook.

why was it again you installed a new HD ? Even the 2.5 notebook HDs have a jumper for slave , primary. Just make sure that the jumper is not on, most notebook HDs it should be off for primary. So you went to the bios and set the boot option to boot from the cdrom drive ?
