Need help with laptop question!!

Hi there everyone. I am new to the forum and this is my first post. I truly hope someone can help me. I have a laptop that I use for work (Gateway 4540GZ) and for the last month or so (it has gotten worse now) I will turn it on and sometimes it will start up fine but other times it will get stuck in the first screen (Gateway logo and the choices to enter BIOS or or Boot settings) when it boots up. Now it has gotten to the point that it will not go past that section. I did notice that when it does boot up the battery does not charge at all. I have tried replacing the ac power adapter but no luck. Does anyone have any ideas?

I thought about replacing the battery but I don't know if the battery would cause something like this. Especially since even if I remove the battery and try to boot with the ac power adapter connected it will get stuck in the same screen. Another thing I notice is that as soon as I plug in the ac adapter it starts on its own without me pressing the power button. Hope someone can chime in.

Thank you all in advance.

If you remove the battery and just plug in the cord the laptop should work fine. it doesnt require a battery to operate.

If it works fine with no battery, it is the battery.

No, I explained in my post that I did remove the battery and it still does the same thing.

If the laptop works without a battery, I doubt this would be the problem. Can you still enter the bios? Try to be quick when pressing the button to do so; I've seen some machines lock up pretty soon after the POST screen is displayed. Or is the computer alright it simply never boots?

If I had to make a guess, I'd wonder if the hard drive was bad. Perhaps the laptop's trying to auto-detect it?

The laptops has the same problem of not booting up fully without the battery as it does with the battery. I try to click the F key to enter the BIOS but it just shows a "Please Wait" on the bottom left corner. The weird thing is that when it does work (when it boots) it will not work at all if I disconnect the ac adapter. The battery shows no charge at all but it shows that it is charging.
