need help with my laptop fast! :(

hey everyone, im new to computerforum.com and i need some help with my laptop

for the past week whenever i open up a video file my laptop's screen blacks out and turns back on and then the mouse becomes very very laggy and after 5 minutes trying to close windows media player it stops. i have also tried with all the other video players and the problem still persists.

could you give me an idea why its doing it and a solution to fix it please??

well my laptop is a toshiba tecra m2, its 1.6 ghz centrino, 512 mb ram, nvidia geforce go 5200 fx and it has a 40 gig hard drive. every time i open up a video, first of all i move my mouse then it just stops, then my screen flickers from normal to a total black screen and so on and it takes about 5 minutes to reach the x button on top right corner to close the window and when WMP closes, my laptop is back to normal.
 
IS it a specific video file that you are trying to play? or does this happen on any video? usually if your computer freezes when its trying to open a file, the file is damaged in some way that makes it very hard for your computer to read it and whenit tries to read it, your comp freezes.
If this is happening with ALL videos you try to play, i've heard of something where when you try to play an AVI file, it uses 100% CPU and freezes.
 
you may want to make sure your file associations are correct for that file extension. In windows explorer click tools, folder opts, file types, then scroll down through the list till you get to the extension, then highlight, at the bottom it should have the extention and the program that will run .
 
nah my computer freezes and blackouts on all types of video files. ive gone in windows explorer and looked up all the video extensions and they are all set to the appropriate program.
 
Try doing a Windows Update. That should get you up to date with all the little fixes & it'l update your media player and video drivers. Also wouldn't hurt to update your video codecs too.
