need help with my laptop

help! I have a Compaq Evo N1000V. I shut it down one time and now it does not power up. No lights, no nothing. I had to replace the AC adapter jack, and several times someone installed it with reversed polarity. Could that cause something to burn out?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
