Need help with OS install on my first build

I put the computer together from all brand new components. Started it up, monitor came on, computer asked for a boot disk, I inserted my XP Pro Upgrade cd. It started to do its thing and then gave me an error screen. Windows had to shut down or risk damaging the computer. Check for hardware updates, BIOS memory something, and here was the code at the bottom of the blue screen:
Technical Information
*** stop: 0x0000007E (0xc0000005, 0xF748E0BF, 0xF78DA308, 0xF78D9F08)
*** pci.sys - Address F747000, datestamp 3b7d855c

So I restarted, and it goes to this screen with a spreadsheet of the IDE device information which I remembered seeing at the first startup. At the bottom of this black screen it reads, "Verifying DMI Pool Data........" And that's it; it freezes.
So I restarted, did some BIOS adjustments like the date and time, drive details, and other minor stuffs. Saved, exited and then got frozen on the screen with "Verifying DMI Pool Data........"
So I restarted and loaded the fail-safe defaults in the BIOS screen. Saved, exited and then got frozen on the screen with "Verifying DMI Pool Data......."

Please help me.

when that error comes up your have over heating problem with the cpu. reseat the cpu and heatsink wiht new thermal paste and retry.

Getting hung on Verifying DMI Pool Data has nothing to do with a overheating CPU.

What kind of drive are you using? Sata or IDE?

I hope it's not overheating, and at the same time it seems like a pretty easy fix. I'm running a SATA hdd and IDE optical.

The IDE was easy because I only have 1 slot. The dvd instal'n guide said to put in the secondary as master, and had no configuration with a SATA hdd drive. So I put the dvd in the sole IDE as master.
There're 8 SATA ports on the mobo: SATA0 - SATA5, GSATA1, and GSATA2. I put the external SATA drive ports in SATA0 and SATA1 and the hdd in GSATA1. I don't know the difference nor where they're supposed to go. The pc build guides on this and other sites don't get that specific.

When that didn't work, I reset the dvd as slave, disconnected the external SATAs and put the hdd in SATA0. Still no luck. Apparently the Pool Data freeze was because the pc was trying to boot from an empty hdd. When I have the pc boot from the optical it goes to the blue screen.

Any suggestions?

Is this upgrade XP pro CD and SP2 or 3? Put the IDE drive as master, set the jumper. The Sata in Sata0. If it a older XP cd you might have to do the F6 and load your Sata drivers from a floppy. Or if you have a working computer with a burner, Slipstream SP3 to your XP CD using nLite.

It is an original XP Pro Upgrade no service packs or patches. I switched the dvd back to master. I tried the F6 route, but I was prompted for a floppy disk only. It looks like I need to do the slipstream route which is what I expected all along. However, two previous attempts, one using AutoStreamer and the other using Nero 5.5 did not work. I'll try nLite.

I got it. I slipstreamed SP2 and then the pc booted fine. Now comes the tedious task of setting up internet connection, updating files, transferring programs, etc. I'll probably be back.
