Recently my laptop died and I really need to get to an email that holds an RMA # for some very expensive headphones. They won't help without it.

I have removed the hard drive from the old computer connected it with a USB adapter and cannot figure out how to find and read my inbox/outbox. I was using Windows XP and Outlook Express.

Is what I am trying to do possible? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have another machine that has outlook express installed but not using it? We can copy the data files to the new computer with outlook express installed and you can access the emails that way.

Yes I have another computer with Outlook Express installed. I have opened outlook express but cannot figure out how to locate and install the files.

As long as outlook express has no accounts set up already, please set up your email account so that there will be a place to copy your data to but do not download any email. disconnect the computer from the internet if you have to. You need to connect the hard drive from the old system to the one you are on. Figure out what drive letter got assigned to the old drive. Your outlook express data will be located in this directory.

x:\Documents and Settings\y\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\z\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Where X is the drive letter of your old hard drive.
Where y is your old user name
where Z is a bunch of numbers and letters with dashes.

All the data folders inside the outlook express folder is what you need to copy and paste to the new drive. You may have to take ownership of those files to be able to view them.

Before you can copy the data into the new outlook express, outlook express must be closed down.

Copy the files to the new outlook express by going here.

C:\Documents and Settings\x\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\y\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Where X is user name you are signed into now
Where Y is a bunch of numbers and letter with dashes.

Paste all those data files into this outlook express folder. Hopefully you understand all this. It's pretty simple but if you've never done it before it can be confusing.
