I have an E machine T2040 desktop that I want to upgrade with a p4 3.0 Prescott 800 FSB HT . I have replaced the motherboard in the past with a MSI Pm8M-V that is suppose to support the cpu I am trying to install. The current cpu that came with the machine is a cleron 2.0 that currently works fine, also upgraded was the power supply to Echo Star 600 watt power supply, Geforce Fx 5200 256 MB DDR video card, 2 Samsung 512 Mb DDR ram , the os running is the factory installed windows xp. The problem I am having is when I install the p4 and turn on the computer everything works fine it boots up and says new hardware found to properly install computer must be restarted. If I continue to use it every thing works fine it sees the new cpu and recognized the ht tec. When its restarted it won’t reboot to windows, I can reboot in safe mode only. I have done a windows repair and still having the same problem.

You were able to find a socket 478 P4? Im not sure what the problem could be, never heard of somethin like that before. Try re-installing windows if you have the original disc. Not sure what else to tell you.

When you replace motherboards, Windows will run unstably (if at all), until you repair windows (at the least). Even then it might have problems. Your best option would be to back up your files and reinstall windows.

When i upgraded all my components, windows just prompted me to re-activate it, after trying to re-activate and failing (my windows IS legal lol) i had to call up microsoft and talk to some foreign person i could hardly understand to get it activated again. I hate microsoft.

major hardware changes, you may have to reformat and reinstall windows.

I don't have the oringal disk I'm not sure if it would work anyway because it will be a factory restore disk That contains the drivers for the original hardware that came with the computer. Is there a way to reformat without haveing to reinstall windows?
When I installed the new motherboard I used a windows xp disk that came with a DEll computer I own and did a windows repair with and got it to work. I tried doing the same when i installed the cpu but it ditient work.

Have you installed the new inf drivers for your motherboard or are you using the ones that came installed with the PC originally?
