Ok well i got my older dell desktop totally cleaned down because it was in a fire that destroyed a office. It was fien after the fire because i dried it out and cleaned it but it smelled like fire. I just took it last week and totally cleaned everything and replaced some of the fans and the power supply case with a different case. I used cd drive and floppy drive of another computer and everything hooked up fine. When i went to try it, instead of the green light coming on when i hit the power button but instead the light turns orange and ofter about a minute the computer turns off. I made sure i hooked everything up correctly but i jsut dont understand this problem. i mean i already took the power supply apart again to make sure everything was hooked up correctly. I have the power supply still unhooked so if i can get any help from here it would be greatly appreciated

You dried it out? As in, it was wet? There's your problem right there (it being in a fire to begin-with aside). Honestly, I wouldn't even waste my time with it.

well, in addition to it being wet like that, being a Dell doesn't help it much either. when you decide that you want to give up on the Dell (you should), build your own computer and tell those after market companies to take a hike. The only reason anyone thinks Dell is any good is because they spend alot of money on advertising. It's pretty safe to say that any computer that's been through a fire is a lost cause. sorry.............

so if i understand correctly. it's been in a fire and after that it has been soaked with water??? and you still think this machine is going to work? the only thing that might still work are the heatsinks :P

he said it DOES work, it only stopped working after he changed the fans and PSU to try and get rid of the smokey smell.

missed that part, my bad.
well it's easy then. start changing it back to the way it was before.
after each part try and start the system.
if it works the last part you changed was the troublemaker.

I'd try the old power supply again to make sure that the new one isn't faulty or inadequate. Make sure that when you switched the case you correctly placed the motherboard stand-offs so that the board isn't grounding against the case.

Well i am sorry for not replying right away but all i did like i said before was take a power supply case from a older compag computer that had the same exact case and i change the fan in in power supply case with the compag fan. it was the same one but with a different plug. i am using the original power supply though. There was one other thing though, i took the fan that hooks up to the back of the case on the inside, and i changed that with the compag one too. But the compag fan had 2 wires and the original dell fan had 3 wires. I have no idea if that could have made a difference but that fan will not power on at all. I jsut made sure that everything i did was the way it was supposed to be put back when i took it apart. I have a decent knowledge of computers but this is just one thing that is really getting me frustrated.

i don't think i mentioned it but when i plug the monitor into the port on the back, nothing shows up on the monitor. I dont know if this helps at all but i am going to go take a look at the computer right now to see if the power supply stang offs for the power board are there like ceewei said
