Need help with this pc booting up

i have an old comp i dont know the specs :o i must forgotten them ;)
i think its P3 anw i am trying to boot it up ,, puting a hard disk and the win xp bootable cd in .... and except that i cant find the option in the bios to change the boot devices(coz there different than my own pc,,,but i looked).....
Still the pc wont recognize i have putted a HD in...
i tried different HD's (and even the deafult ,its own HD)
i tried different (how u call them in english :confused: ) those wires to connect to HD
I tried diferrent power supply wires
i tried different wire slots.
But still the comp only loads the first screen where (it suppose to show the HD's) it make a memory test or smth and then freezes.... i dont know what to do any HELP ?
 
So it's locking up when you try to boot? Make sure you have the drives set to Auto so it'll enter the settings when you power it up.

The power connection shouldn't matter. The IDE connection really shouldn't either with a computer around that age. It might, but usally you can select the drive you want to be bootable, regardless of it's position on the IDE cable. However, if you still can't get it to work, check on the motherboard. Assuming you only have 2 connection(no RAID) you should see something like Primary and Secondary IDE, or IDE0 and IDE1. Connect your cable to 0, Primary, or whichever would come first on your system) From the mobo connection, connect the first IDE connection to your primary drive.

As for the drive, be sure the jumpers are correct. Western Digital drives can be particually bad if you don't have the jumpers set just right(there's a setting for single master, and one for master with slave present) Most of that info could be found on the manufacturers website.
 
i have the jumpers correctly set up....
the comp boots untill the screen where it should list my hard disks and cd roms
but doenst list anything it makes a memory test and then freeze
How can i make it boot from the cd rom ? if i cant find it from the bios ? i did undersund
 
Take out what you dont need!

A trick that never fails is disconnect what you dont need to operate... Sound Card, Network Card, Modem.... etc. I would also disconnect the hard drive and connect a IDE cd-rom and see if the bios recognizes it. If it does try putting in a bottable CD and if it boots then its most likely a problem with the drive configuration and not your computer or bios. To boot from a CD make sure you bios boot priority is set to allow a CD boot. Your CD drive should come before all other drives. When you boot your computer should ask you if you want to boot from cd or just boot from it.

Triple Check the Jumpers

If you take everything out but the Processor, Motherboard, Memory, and Video Card does the computer still hang after the memory post? If not there is a problem with one of the parts you took out.
