need help with usb to usb file transfer

hi, I am not very good with computers and I really need some help. I recently purchased a laptop and needed to transfer some documents from my pc to laptop so i bought a usb to usb link cable. It arrived today and I cannot get it to work at all. I downloaded 2 programs pc-linq and superlink. the only thing i can see to click on in these programs is connect to remote which i guess means to the other computer. However when I do this it comes up with remote connection does not exist etc. Can anyone please help me, I need to get this sorted out quickly as I am going to live in China next month. Please help!

well if its just any regular USB cable it won't work.
Did you buy a special one for file transfers?
Another idea is to get a USB flash drive and save files from your PC onto that and then upload onto your laptop
