need help with video format and iTunes

i riped a dvd onto my laptop and it was in .avi format. then i used a converter to turn it into a MPEG2, and then tried to add it into my library. it didn't work, so then i converted it into a .mp4 format and that still didn't import into my library. i looked online at some solutions, like making the name shorter and reinstalling quicktime and then tried them. those didn't work, so then i tried manually importing it, and even that didn't work. either i didn't try something else that may have worked, or i'm using the wrong type of converter. can someone give me a solution that will work, or a link to a known freeware video to .mp4 program that has a good reputation for working well.

also: my version of iTunes is 7.6 and i just updated it yesterday.

thanks.

I personally don't have a clue, but a friend at work rips his DVDs to his touch. He reckons the best setting to set the converter too is...

480x360, vbr=600, abr=80 fps=30
In MP4 format. But he also uses a fully paid MP4 converter. I do not know of any good free ones, you might want to do a bit of googling to get one.
