For some reason when I go to My Computer then try to open a drive letter or even a folder the Search Results window opens. How do I set it back to the regular way of just double clicking to open the folder???

Have you installed anything new or updated the drivers for your video card lately? This type of problem usually points towards something like this where you see a bad install or driver conflict putting a damper on things. Since this occurs with MyComputer where Windows Explorer is also tied in a cross link to system files or something was corrupted.

If you look in the general tab you will note the last option on the bottom is for single click or double clicking on a selected item. Make sure that's set for double clicking. You will note the "Restore Defaults" button seen in the screen there is another thing that should return things to normal if there are no other problems found.

Did you happen to try out any Vista themes or transformation paxks by chance? Speaking of editing the registry that and the msconfig utilty had to be used in order to remove most of a transformation pack here since there are no items seen in the add/remove programs or the Programs menu.

The changes made by something on that idea or other program just installed would effect the registry. The system restore feature is another thought if this has only been seen in the last few days or so. A bad install of something could hit the registry like this. subtle has a list of how the values should be by default there.

Funny under "[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Drive\shell\find\command]"

I only find one item which is the string value "REG_EXPAND_SZ %SystemRoot%\Explorer.exe"

Hey Subtle

that link you posted seems to be exactly what happened to me. I had windows blinds running a vista theme at the time and when I had my videos folder open it suddenly crashed and said windows explorer error then this problem with the search window occurred. When I get a chance I'll try the suggestions on that link. Thanks for all the help

Oh also I used Free Window Registry Repair to try and fix any registry problems it scaned and found errors and fixed them but the search problem still happens.

The freeware that has been used here for several years now mainly cleans up any orphans left there by uninstallers but does fix a few errors found along the way. http://www.majorgeeks.com/RegCleaner_d460.html

When the Vista transformation pac kwas tried here the removal had to be done manually by use of the msconfig utility to unload two items in the services group as well as in the startup. Then with the RegCleaner mentioned above the main windows shows the registry keys for all installed programa. I'm currently down to a different look on the shutdown menu and a Vista circular image left on the W.Explorer menu bar.

Windows Blinds obviously made a registry change when that was used. For Windows Explorer errors one older site has several articles on the different versions from 95 up seen at http://www.colba.net/~hlebo49/errexplo.htm
