my friends computer was running for months without an anti virus, so i installed AVG and ran it, it found thousands of corrupted files, it deleted them and his computer failed to start, even in safe mode, so he then tried to reinstall XP, but that seemed to crash and now it fails to open in safe mode, and wont let him reinstall XP,
when you put computer on it goes thru the usual motions then just after the XP screen it goes black and says Floppy Diskette Search Error press F1 for continue and F2 for set up, now his computer doesnt have a floopy drive, i have an valuation copy of XP i am lending him till he ges the chance to get vista, i dont understand why his computer is doing this, any help would be great, i have run a hardware test, hardware is working fine

If the AV deleted the corrupted files instead of repairing them, and those files were necessary to boot... < dead OS. Safe mode or not, certain files are still needed to load into the OS.

When he tried to reinstall XP, where did it crash? You may be able to select the "Repair" option to try and fix the current system. From the sound of things though, it just might be worth a fresh install.

it doesnt offer a repair option, i cant do a fresh installation, it wont let me do anything, it just goes to the press F1 for continue or F2 for set up black screen

its an evaluation copy, just wanting to install it till he gets vista

You should still be able to load the Eval copy. Put the CD in the drive, then turn on the computer. While it's POSTing, hit the key you need to in order to select the boot device. Select CD, and if prompted to hit a key to boot to the CD (sometimes you need this additional step) press something. The CD should load it's temp files and will walk you through the install process. I would recommend you format everything when asked about it on the install process.

On boot up have you tried going into the BIOS and changing the boot sequence so that the CD is the first boot?

Go into your bios and set it to look for your cd rom first or disable the floppy drive then boot.

I'd go with a fresh install as well but the install cd should have the option to repair.. don't think the repair will work for you in this case but worth a shot
