right now i have a gateway computer with a dual core processor and 3 gbs of ram. I am looking to go to a quad core processor and 6-8gbs.....i dont feel like buying a complete machine through all the huge companies. unless its close in price of just picking the pieces by myself. So i need help in finding case etc. processor. I would like to not spend alot lol.....if its possible. No monitor, no mouse etc. already have everything else.

I am going to have this computer for years to come so i wanna get a good one.

It all depends on what you want to do with this build. If you want to game, then you might need a whole new case. If you want to upgrade the CPU (depending on the socket type) you should be able to just upgrade it. A lot of the times pre-builts are a pain to upgrade (example weak airflow). What do you plan to do with this build? And I would provide more information on your computer in your next post, so we can find out the socket type.

Upgrading the motherboard and/or processor in a pre-built system can be asking for trouble. Many manufacturers have specific motherboards made for them, but they usually do adhere to ATX standards. You might run into other issues such as space for and access to components when you go this route.

You are probably better off getting the new case/motherboard/CPU/PSU and then reusing your drives/keyboard/mouse/monitor.

Willing you have the money to upgrade all that. I agree with Zatharus though, some BIOS's and Mobo's can cause trouble with new hardware. I was in a similar situation about upgrading my computer, I ended up opting to wait until I can do my own build.

my plans are to use for college, play some games......i want to get the best for my money but not go overboard. Max would be about 700. So if you guys can help it would be great. I don't have a problem with amd i noticed they are quite a bit cheaper so i would be looking at an amd quad core....Scratch the idea of upgrading my computer that i currently have i can just sell it.

what about this?

i would just need a video card i think.

That's a pretty decent package for the money. I'm not sure about the PSU though. Don't go cheap in that department.

You can have a very nice computer for under $700 right now. I'm sure a couple builds will be coming up in short order.

Not a bad idea on selling your current computer and using that money for the upgrade. :good:

yeah. i would probably be better getting my own pieces together....so any products you guys have used or now if they are good and are reasonable just post up here.

Chances are you'll have to buy a new motherboard, as most OEMs use nonstandard front-panel connectors for some reason (and because most of them are POS anyways). If you're good at tinkering with electronics, that shouldn't matter, though; the screw mounting and other connections usually adhere to ATX standards like Zath said.

yeah i just figured it would be cheaper for me to just try to replace the motherboard and cpu then re buy everything. i just dont want to buy it and not have it work. thats why i came the pros here lol. i think i will just get a whole new setup instead of messing my gateway up. ill sell it and use that money for my new computer.
