Need help!

I have a 2 year old Dell XPS system that is still a great gaming computer. HOWEVER, the other day while playing Dragon Age 2, it froze (not a big deal)

After doing a hard restart do to an unresponsive computer, my desktop was acting weird. It would go to the desktop then flicker a few times and go black and freeze. Other times, it would never even load the desktop up.

I started it in safe mode and ran a full virus scan with no results. Safe mode worked just fine

I could not get it to work at all, flickering screen, freezes, unexplained restarts...I figured I had a hardware problem. SOOOO I ran the Dell hardware diagnostics....and it froze in the middle both times.

FINALLY I just powered it back on right now, and I got this message: "One display adapter on system has been disable because its driver is not compatible with the driver for the VGA adapter". NOT sure what that means...

I did a check of errors on Vista, and saw that I had a "VIDEO HARDWARE ERROR"

This is what the report stated:

I am sorry for the long post, but I have NO idea what is wrong or how to fix it. I believe I am right about this being a hardware issue, but I cant pinpoint it and I need some expert help! Thanks in advance!

You have an issue with your video card or the drivers installed for the card. Boot into safe mode and uninstall your video drivers and then download the latest drivers and install them. What video card do you have and what Operating system are you running?

I am running Vista 32 bit Home edition with SP2

I have two Nvidia Geforce 8800GT video cards running together SLI

I actually booted up Vista's Device Manager, and it told me that "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)" on both Cards

I booted into safe mode and opened the device manager. I clicked on the cards and clicked "update drivers" it said I had the most recent ones installed. So I then clicked "revert to previous drivers".

After restarted into normal mode I am still having the same error messages.

Right click on the video cards in device manager and click on the driver tab. What driver version is installed.

is there something I am missing? A better way to reset/reinstall the graphics cards?

is it possible the cards BOTH went back at the same time? (I doubt/hope not)

Also, since this started happening, I have noticed that my fan noise is much higher
