I'm looking into building a gaming computer (not really good or really bad) for a decent price. right now our old computer is really outdated (2 ghz P4,64MB AGP4X graphics card, 256MB of RAMBUS memory,40 GB HD ect.) so i'm looking at stuff on tigerdirect.com and newegg.com and am having some questions:

What processor is really best for gaming? i was looking at AMD's but they looked slow and then looked ate Intel P4's and Celeron D's.

what does "socket" have to do with motherboards? is the higher the # better?

What is bus speed? how important is it?

How much RAM? i'm thinking 512MB of pc3200

thanks in advance

The AMD's are best for gaming, i would go with an Athlon 64 series CPU since its a really nice cpu, but not that expensive. The AMD Athlongs outperform the P4's and Celeron D's at gaming.

512MB would be ok for gaming, but i highly recommend getting 1GB if you want to play some of the newer games.

What are you thinking of for a video card?

With respect to the motherboard it's just a property (kinda like the number of seats in a car, doesnt necesarilyt mean good, bad, it just is)

CPU 101

CPU 101

RAM 101

dont get semprons. They are rele slow. Go with Geoff and get Athlon 64
You, of course, do realize that speed and performance (as well as performance/dollar) are different things right?

yes.... IM just saying semprons are outdated, and mine runs at 1.6 GHZ, and an Athlon running at 1.6GHZ would beat the crap out of mine.
