Need Help

Sorry to use my first posting for a problem, but I desperately need help! I recently rec'd a used laptop (Dell Inspiron 1501) and wanted to wipe it clean to be able to put my stuff on there. A friend gave me a program to use to wipe it, but now I have rec'd a message and it won't do anything. It boots up and then comes to a blue screen and won't let me do anything else. The screen states the following:
"STOP: The ACPI BIOS in this system is not fully compliant with the ACPI specification. Please read the README.TXT for possible workarounds. You can also contact your system's manufacturer for an updated BIOS, or visit www.hardware-update.com to see if a new BIOS is available.
The BIOS in this system is not fully ACPI compliant. Please contact your system vendor for an updated BIOS. If you are unable to obtain an updated BIOS or the latest BIOS supplied by your vendor is not ACPI compliant, you can turn off ACPI mode during text mode setup. To do this, simply press the F7 key when you are prompte to install storage drivers. The system will not notify you that the F7 key was pressed, it will silently disable ACPI and allow you to continue your installation."

Sorry this is so long! Can anyone guide me on what to do?? I would appreicate any advice. Thanks,
Amy

Well, "rec'd" does not mean stolen or anything.....where I work, we have laptops used for specific things. Once they are done being used, they are given to the employees.
I see that my post tells me what to do, to a certain extent, but I am still confused, as I don't even know what a BIOS is, much less where to find it.

ok, go Here

Download the file and follow the instructions on that page.

oh wait, you cant get into windows atm? if so you will need to follow the isntructiosn for DOS. i think, though someone else may have to add some support to this first.

I appreciate your help thus far on this. I know I must be computer illiterate or something, but I still can't get this to work. I put the download onto a flash drive, but then how to I get to DOS? When I first start up the computer it goes thru the dell screen, then the windows screen, then the blue screen with the error message. Sorry I am so much trouble!

first off, dont worry about being trouble, we are here to help! :D

yeah the DOS prompt may not be possible, as you are using a newer OS.

DOS Prompt:
Run the BIOS update utility from DOS environment (Non-Windows users)

NOTE: You will need to provide a bootable DOS diskette. This executable file does not create the DOS system files.

1. Copy the file Win1501241.exe to a bootable floppy.

2. Boot from the floppy to the DOS prompt.

3. Run the file by typing Y:\Win1501241.exe (where y is the drive letter where the executable is located).

i have helped all i can here, i dont know enough on this subject to help you further, sorry. maybe another member can help :D

well ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) is a standard for power consumption. So I'm assuming there's a problem with the amount of power your laptop is getting, maybe a weak power supply, or something like that. I don't know too much about it, but I do know that much.

it would help if you told us what program you used and what exactly you did.
did you try to wipe the hard drive, or just take crap off from previous users?
it sounds to me that the program screwed something up, and when something gets screwed up, i usually suggest reinstalling windows.

Instead of a Dell Inspiron 1501, why don't you go for a Dell Latitude D600, they're only about £300. Its on Ebuyer, and you can check the specs from there. I don't know how much it compares to the Dell Inspiron 1501, because I don't know if its default or modded, so hope this helps.
