Here's the situation my OS VISTA stopped functioning tonight. It was telling me that it wasn't a genuine copy and to enter a new key code, long story short it is genuine and none of the fixes worked. So I ended up reinstalling the whole system and the drivers and software on my computer. However, under system, windows activation, it's now saying 30 days to activate windows, which I am going to try to do.

So here's what I would like everyone's opinion on, If I buy a upgrade copy of windows 7 will it install and run properly or should I just go ahead and buy the full version and do a clean install?

I think I know the best answer but I didn't think it would hurt for a second, third or even tenth opinion.:)

I am not sure if you can buy upgrade copy. I believe you need to upgrade it from genuine copy. To save money, you can consider OEM copy. But it would only allow you to use it in this machine. When you upgrade with new motherboard, you proabably new copy.

If you want OS for free, consider ubuntu.

Windows 7 upgrade doesn't require that the current Windows installation be activated, in fact a trick is to download and install the Windows 7 trial and use that to upgrade.

If you're wanting to upgrade and keep all of your data/programs, you need to check compatibility because this can only be done from certain versions of Vista and only if you're upgrading to certain versions of Windows 7. Personally, I think it's more trouble than it's worth, and it's always good to go with a clean install, which you can with the upgrade version so long as there is a Windows install currently on the computer.
