Need powerful computer for analysis

Hi computer forumers (I'm new here, be nice),

I want to buy a desktop computer but I don't know where to start. There are so many companies out there and I need impartial opinions. (Sorry. It's one of those again. :o)

I surf the web, download music and films, play poker from time to time.

But I mainly play and analyse chess (the game) with my computer. I use Fritz 12 and Rybka 3 and I always feel like these programs aren't used to their full potential. I would like to have 5 hours of analysis available to me in 5 seconds. I was thinking that the speed and quality of the calculations probably have something to do with the speed of the processor but then again I'm not an expert in that field.

Considering what I do, I have three questions;

1. What computer should I buy? What company?
1. I saw the alienware Area51 ALX desktop at 4000$ ? Would you say it's a good deal?
2. Is there a way I could hide my IP address when I download stuff off the web?

My budget is around 5 000$. I can maybe push it as far as 10 000$ if it's really worth it. Thanks a lot for the help.

It depends on how those software programs are coded. If they're not coded to take advantage of multiple cores, for example, then it may not make sense to spend that type of money. You're right, though, the speed of the processor, the architecture, and the number of threads available are important, particularly if these programs do take advantage of multiple cores and benefit form the updated architecture of some of the latest processors.

They may have that information at their respective website. I took a quick look at the fritz 12 product page and the recommended processor is a core 2 duo, so an upgrade to, say, an i7 may improve performance. It would help to know what processor you're running right now.

What are the specs of your current system?

We typically recommend that you build it yourself, but if you're totally opposed to that, then I suggest looking at a cheaper build from any of the big name companies. You mentioned Alienware. I'm guessing that would be fine, although you certainly don't have to spend that kind of money. At the most, for your purposes, maybe $2,500.

I'm not sure what they're charging for the OEMs nowadays, but you'd want something with an i7, a Radeon 5xxx graphics adapter, or an nvidia GTX 4xx, around 6GB of memory (mainly to run tri-channel... I don't the max RAM usage of the chess software you mentioned, recommended RAM is 3GB).

Most of these companies give you a base build, then allow you to customize that build on their website, so those are just some rough components I'd base the configuration on, if that makes sense.

Guys. Don't be jealous of my budget. Worked like crazy for it. Fight the super rich 1% of the USA instead or Walmart. Your choice.

-Pretty sure those programs (called Deep Fritz and Deep Rybka) do take advantage of multiple processors.

-My specs are 4850e AMD athlon, 3 GB DDr2 memory, 640GB SATA hard disk, windows vista. If that says something to you.

But apparently someone somehow dropped the tower on the ground and some dude told me that the life of the computer would be short. It also kinda makes weird sounds. Probably gonna have to start with another tower anyway.

-By a "build", you mean play inside the tower? :eek: A little bit scary for me. Although the intel processor at http://www.intel.com/products/processor/corei7EE/index.htm is sexy.
