My friend just got a free computer for her kid. They aren't to tech savvy so they are "meh, it's a computer who cares". Anyways this thing is ancient, I think I used this model back in school back in 02.

Problem I'm having is that it is running windows xp, and seems to be missing any sort of installer program. Can't install anything on it, keep getting either an error message saying the computer doesn't know what program it is, or a small box with a big X right above the OK click box. All the installer programs I'm finding are for windows 7 or newer. Can anyone help me find the proper program to put on this kid's computer so he can install and play his games?

Yeah its called reinstall windows as it seems the system is corrupt or infected.

Ya, thought about that after I posted this. If I can't install other programs, how am I going to install the installer...

Reinstalling Windows is very much different then installing programs. Just get a Windows disk and you'll see (bbot off disk btw, don't start the installer from the corrupted copy on the PC). Judging by the age of the computer though, I would reccomend using Linux Mint. Windows XP is dated, 7/8 are to new. Vista may work fine.

BTW I hope the kid knows most games just plain won't run on a 02 computer.

You boot off the CD. Put the CD in the CD drive, reboot the PC. As the PC starts up again, before Windows boots you will see a message that says 'Press any key to boot off CD...' so press any key and Windows XP will install.
