I was looking for a new desktop and was going to go with another hp til I found this computer "Gateway FX Series FX6840". I know its a gaming computer, but I mainly use my computer for internet, office programs, pictures, and video storage. I really like the reviews of how fast it is but not sure if this is too much to pay for what I need. (I really love the way it looks as well with the red leds). Anybody have any thoughts on this computer? AND why is it that there are so many different model numbers after the fx6840-21, fx6840-55, fx6840-03 ect. (on newegg the -21 model has Bluray and -55 doesnt I think, but are SAME PRICE?)

*any thoughts on gateway products would be helpul too, and no I really do not want to build a computer on my own, kids keeping me too busy for that

I don't like gateway. Their costumer service is bad and there is only 1 year limited warranty. In my opinion the price is too high and there is nothing special with this computer. If you don't need gaming computer look for something cheaper.

I would tend to agree with v3nes, but not about the warranty, 1 year is pretty much standard on most prebuilts, look at HP, Acer or Lenovo as examples, there are a few of their products that will have 2 or 3 year warranty, but for the most part, it is all 1. For your needs a $500 pre built, $~400 if you built it yourself, is all you need. Then, because you are using the system for video/image storage, get an external hard drive with the money saved, which won't be a lot for a 1TB drive, it will still come out much cheaper than the system you picked, so if anything happens to the drive in your computer, you have backups of the important stuff, and won't lose it all.

Would be a much better option

I agree with Aastii gateway are pretty much crap I have fixed a lot of computers for a few years now and I would say about half of them were gateways.

HP is a good brand or you could also look at dell thats what I have used for years and have had virtually no problems with them and they would have some cheap desktops that would fit your purposes well.

Thanks for the advice guys. I actually did just buy a new external hard drive "Western Digital WD Elements 2 TB USB 2.0" got a great deal on it. I will defineltly check out that HP. I have heard some bad things bout gateway, but I really did love the look of that computer and some of the features it had....but I'm still kind of learning about the ins and outs on desktops. $ is not really and issue but I just don't want to overspend on something I really don't need, but I do want something that will be quality and last. So thanks for the replys so quickly!
