Need some advice

I'm an old PC builder that used to build and fidle w/ OC'ing AMD CPU's back when AMD's could be OC'd easy and the chips were cheap. So it's been some time since I've built a rig and I'm probably way out of the know, but I'm toying with the idea of building a new rig and need some advice.

My current PC, that's used for general stuff like email/surfing/gaming, is a Asus G73 laptop. When I picked her up she was fast and could run the newest games on full tilt, but now she's having a hard time just keeping up. So I'm got a little dilema. Do I go with the newest of Asus's offering (the G750)? Or do I build myself a desktop. My budget would be anywhere from $1,250 to $1,500 (max).

So please spare an old timer a few minutes and post up your advice and, if possible, bring me up to speed on current components. Thanks in advance.

Well first off i would always say desktop :) mainly because they are so much easier to upgrade and keep up to date hardware.

AMD are probably the cheapest way to overclock, as with intel only the more expensive k series processors can be overclocked.

Are you familiar with new ranges of hardware like, AMD bulldozer, intel sandybridge, haswell etc.

Thanks for replying!

I'm afraid I'm totally not up to speed when it comes to hardware. I do know that Haswell is the new chipset to go with. Otherwise, I guess I'm in the dark. I'm also leaving towards a desktop. Can you please make some hardware recommendations?

What level of gaming are you into ? I assume you are interested in overclocking ?

Is your budget just for desktop alone or including screen etc

I like to play some of the current games on full tilt, but I wouldn't go as far to say that I'm just a gamer. I would be open to overclocking and would like to explore liquid cooling. Even if I don't go the overclocking route, addtional cooling can't hurt for longevity and performance right? Finally, my max budge of $1,500 is not including a monitor. I've browsed around a bit and would probably be in the market for a 24" or bigger version. I think I like a 24" version of an Asus monitor.

Also, since I'm building from scratch I'd be a little more open to spending a little more to get the setup that's going to last a bit more in the long run.

Well the processors I would be looking at are.

Intel i5 4670k or i7 4770k http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-4770K-vs-Intel-Core-i5-4670K

The 4770k is the better cpu, but is more expensive.

Amd fx 8350 or a10 6800k http://cpuboss.com/cpus/AMD-FX-8350-vs-AMD-A10-6800K

As you can see from the comparison the 8350 is slightly better

Personally I would say choose between the i5 4670k or fx 8350, performance of both processors is impressive.

The 4670k is $240 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...r=BESTMATCH&Description=4670k&N=-1&isNodeId=1

The fx 8350 is $200 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113284

As far as liquid cooling, I would go for something like the corsair h80i http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181031

Update, I found this article on the 6800k http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Overclocking-The-Stilt-APU-LN2,23689.html

Considering the 6800k is only $150 it may be a steal.

Thanks so much for your advice/input jamesd1981! It's much appreciated. :)

Now it's been so long that I built a rig, I have no idea which sockets/mobos to use. Can anyone give me some pointers along this route?

The main sockets are

Amd, am3+ which is old but still well in use, fm2 which is the newest, fm2+ is due out near the end of the year.

Intel, 1155 which covers sandybridge and ivybridge, sandybridge is starting to fall away most retailers stock less sandybridge proceesors now, ivybridge has the widest range of processors at the moment.

1150 which is intel`s newest socket as this socket is still so new not all the processors are out yet, there are no really cheap processors at the moment they start at i5 range.
