Need some help buying a new computer

Hey Guys I am looking to buy a new computer which I basically use to watch DVDs, download and play mp3s, do all my internet banking, surfing the net, and some sports video games.

After some research I was thinking of a Gateway GT5404 which has:
- Pentium D 915
- 1GB DDR2 mem
- 250GB hard drive
----$580

or a Gateway GT55408 which has all the same features except has:
- Intel Core 2 Duo E4300
- 320 GB hard drive
---$700

--How much faster is a Pentium D compared to the Intel Core 2 Duo...is it worth the extra 120?

Also the higher end Gateway has the Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 and 2GB DDR mem for $980.

Sooo what do you guys think would be the best value for what I am using this computer for. Any advice, comments, or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Those computers are okay, but are not worth their prices. You can get much more for your money when you build yourself.

Of those two computers, the C2D is by far better..the Pentium D's are absolute crap, and you'd be better off with an AMD processor. Also, now generally isn't a good time to be buying a new computer/processor, because Intel will be refreshing the Core 2 Duo lineup, and cutting prices by as much as 40%.

Its up to you. April 22nd Intel slashes their prices. And building yourself isnt all that difficult, you will save money, and learn something you will likely use more than you'd expect. And besides, everyone likes something they make themselves better:)

another thing to look at is you'll know every part of it and it will be alot more easy to upgrade with pre built like hp you can only go so far with costum its endless and ya i believe the nvidia 8600 cards wil be released soon

How can you only go so far with PC's you build yourself rather than Pre-built? I thought it was the other way around.

And relating to the topic...I would suggest building a computer yourself as it is much cheaper, and you got a lot more out of it. Plus, it's more fun. ;)

I think thats what he meant, although it was confusing. But yea, computer manufacturers like dell try to put limits on upgrades, because theyd rather have you buy a whole new PC from them. Its generally quite difficult to upgrade certain parts due to case construction, or driver conflictions.

ya sorry thanks for clearing that up -=[DeEP]Inferno=- thats exactly what i meant you can only upgrade certin things on for example hp like memory and the video card but on a self built you can upgrade any part you please

The biggest things ive had trouble with are size requirements within the case as well as lack of extra ports on the motherboard cuz they usually use the cheapest motherboards, and cheapest of everything except the CPU, so it LOOKS better. And drivers and BIOS can be a real pain.
