Need some help with a slow computer

Hello all. I am using a Dell Inspiring ONE2320 all-in-one desktop, and bought it new about 3 years ago. About a year ago the computer started to slow up when it came to anything involving an Internet connection, including downloading updates for the system. The computer was hooked directly into an at&t isp modem at the time so I bought a new modem thinking the old one went bad but that didn't help. When I moved shortly after that, I went with a wireless option and got a wireless router through Xfinity and the computer worked great for about a month. Then it went back to its old ways and is now slower than ever. I can't even do something as simple as going to google.com without the connection timing out. I moved the computer closer to the router and plugged it directly into the router and it seemed to improve greatly, but it's not practical to keep it there since the router is on the floor next to a chair in my living room and I can't move it anywhere else in my apartment.

Yesterday I bought a netgear wireless USB adapter and it seems to have helped somewhat, I was able to browse the Internet and even watch some videos on YouTube (still with a slow buffer speed) but when I went to use iTunes to buy some music it seems like even the wireless adapter isn't helping much.

Any ideas on what is going on with my computer?

Thanks for any advice.

I had a similar issue with my dell laptop with the wireless cutting in and out. Ended up being my harddrive. Another member might have a better idea, but is recommend running a harddrive test on it.

1. Get the modem/router off the floor and up sitting on a shelf or desk.
2. What speed package are you paying for?
3. Go to www.speedtest.net and do a speedtest and post the results of download and upload.
4. What model of model of modem/router do you have?

Ran a speed test through comcast:
IPv4: Ping 24ms Download 5.59Mbps (Peak 6.37)
Upload 11.65 Mbps (peak 12.34)
IPv6: Ping 24ms Download 9.81Mbps (Peak 16.05)
Upload 11.98Mbps (peak 12.40)

As for getting the router up off the floor that's easier said than done, that's the only place I can hook it into the wall, and it happens to be in a corner with an oversized chair, so that's why it's on the floor next to it.

The router Is an Arris model TG862G/CT and my service is through Xfinity comcast, and I pay for 105Mbps.

I also got a new router from xfinity this past week thinking it was the problem, obviously it wasn't.
And I was able to download malwarebytes and do a full scan when I hooked the computer directly into the router several weeks ago. It found quite a bit of junk on the computer and it has been removed.

just curious..........

John - after running speedtest, what do the numbers indicate?

I ran it on my desktop:

ping 9 ms
download 66.31
upload 4.35

Things run fast enough for me, and I use all the malware/adware programs you suggest to keep things clean and running smoothly, so I'm just curious.

thanks for all you, AgentSmith, Geoff et al do,

Bob

It's typically not good etiquette to hop on somebody else's thread for your own question.

Either way all that's telling you is that your internet is capable of sending you up to 66.31 megaBITS per second and you're capable of uploading something to the internet (like a video or picture) at a speed 4.35 megaBITS. The reason I'm capitalizing BITS is because most people are more familiar with measurements like megabytes. There are 8 bits in a byte so you're capable of downloading something at 8.28 megaBYTES per second. That'e equivalent to 1-2 high quality songs in a second.

If you are paying for 105mb speed then there is something definitely wrong somewhere. You will need to call comcast and have them figure it out.

Is there any way possible to do a speedtest on another computer somehow, like a laptop hooked up with an ethernet cable? Need to determine if its the network or your specific pc.

I kinda felt funny doing it, but then I thought if I started a new thread, I'd be asking the same question again. My apologies to all involved.

Thanks for the explanation, by the way.

This is a great forum, especially for knuckleheads like me! I'll pay better attention next time!
