Hey all im just about to ask some probably very nooby questions but i need help cause im getting all mixed up. I got videotron as my isp and im connected to the main line here coming inside my house for internet. From there it goes everywhere else for regular TV cable. I was curious one day to see if i was able to get internet upstairs by plugging another modem in another room and it worked but my ip address was different from when i was plugged downstairs? Why is this? I usually have a static ip. If i plug back downstairs it goes back to my regular ip i had before. Upstairs the ip is totally different and it changes again if i go to another cable connector around the house. Isn't it videotron that gives me my ip address and not the plug im connected to?

Thanks a lot i appreciate it :D

The hub assigns you an internal IP, you are connecting two computers aren't you? What do you mean you plugged another modem in another room?

Sorry did not explain right. What i meant was that i take the SAME modem i have and unplug it from the cable wire it is plugged in now and bring it up and plug it into another upstairs. Even though i got the same modem i have a different ip when i check a site like ipchicken.com Is it my router thats changing my ip cause upstairs i just tried it by plugging directly into the modem.

I have cable as well, and from memory mine changes when I power cycle it, that means I turn it off then on after a few mins. Go to GRC and do the shield up test, it will show you your REAL IP, because most ISP have proxy servers and sites like whatismyip.com show just the proxy servers.
