I don't know much about the technical part of computers but I was hoping to buy a new tower for my dell. What would be the best and newest one to get? I need something farely cheap too, but with a good amount of memory and disk space. I need it to be able to install Adobe, Marcomedia, and a lot of other programs. I'm not even sure how much even a simple tower costs to be able to explain more of what I need. Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

I wouldnt buy a computer "cheap"...
Any computer you can buy for "cheap" is normaly not worth bothering with. The ammout of cash you are going to spend you could buy all the hardwear you will need for a decent running system.

 Would this be any good or would this be considered expensive compared to other decent computers out there?

Dell
Dimension 4700C
Pentium® 4 Processor 540 with HT Technology (3.20GHz, 800 FSB), Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition

$1,575.00/$48 a month

This would be my ideal computer, but would it be better to get a cheaper model? I just like how small it is b/c I don't have much space on my comp. desk.

make it yourself, you can make a pentium 4 3.2 for half that price, im currently making myself a pentium 4 3.0 , 512 ram, dvd burner, and a couple other things for about 650$us.

I need something farely cheap too, but with a good amount of memory and disk space.
Unfortunately with OEMs those are often mutually exclusive requirements

I'm not even sure how much even a simple tower costs to be able to explain more of what I need.
Prolly best to give us the budget and then we can spec the system.

I wouldnt buy a computer "cheap"...
Really depends :p

I really wish I would be able to make my own computer, but I'm am clueless when it comes to the technical part of computers.
Often small stores can install everythign for you (or even do custom comps) ... sure you'll pay $40-$100 or whatever for the installation but it'll still be cheaper :)

is that still too expensive for a computer?
Yes.

Lets have a look at your system:

Pentium® 4 Processor 540 with HT Technology (3.20GHz, 800 FSB) ... $250
Memory 1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 400MHz (2x512M) 1GB4 .. $130
Keyboard Dell USB Keyboard EK ... $5
Monitor No Monitor ... $0
Video Card Integrated Intel® Graphics Media Accelator 900 IV .... $0 (comes with mobo)
Hard Drive 160GB SATA (7,200rpm) Hard Drive 160S ... $90
Floppy Drive ... $5
Additional Storage Devices 128MB Dell USB Memory Key 128MK ... no idea, not more than $25
Mouse Dell USB 2-button scroll mouse SM ... $10 (and thats generous)
Network Interface Integrated 10/100 Ethernet IN ... $0 (comes with mobo)
Modem Integrated 56K MDC Data / Fax modem IM ... $0 (comes with mobo)
Document Management Adobe® Acrobat® Reader 6.0 AAREAD ... $0
CD and DVD Drives FREE UPGRADE! 24x CD-RW / DVD-ROM Combo Drive 24COMBP ... free upgrade my ass they give you one drive instead of two and save $15 .... $35
Sound Card Integrated 5.1 Channel Audio IS ... $0 (comes with mobo)
Speakers No Speaker Option N ... $0
Productivity Software WordPerfect®, Powerful Word Processing CORELM Security Software No Security Subscription NS2
Digital Music Dell Jukebox - easy-to-use music player and CD burning software MMBASE
Digital Photography Paint Shop™ Pro® Trial plus Photo Album™ Starter Edition DPS
... sure whatever $100
Media Reader Solution 8 in 1 Media Card Reader with Front / Rear IEEE 1394 and Rear S/PDIF ports MCR ... $0 (its in the case)

Mobo ... $75 (and thats really goddamn generous).

What it really costs.... $790

Thanks so much for taking the time to recommend the AMD 64. I'll will check into a little more
.
Do note that the Socket754 Athlon there will eventually be discontinued although thats a hell of a long time from now and i concur with the reccomendation :)

Hey hydro, what are you going to primarily going to be doing w/ this new PC? Gaming or just everday all around decent PC?

Well the system i noted is more suited as a generalpurpose box. To get a gaming box out of that would require upping the mobo and video card :)

Actually I'm using this computer to design web pages.
I ended up just buying the computer with the athlon processor from abspc.com. I just realized that I got the tower and it doesn't have a zip drive (at least I think it doesn't  ), but I did get a video card.
I just feel a little strange not knowing about the technical part of computers yet I work on web pages.

what is mobo?

Does that system have a zip drive? I really hope so b/c I ended up buying one of those towers.
(Is calling it a tower even the right word to use?)

this is what I got but with some upgrades that aren't listed...but I don't see anything about a zip drive. I guess if it's possible I'll just buy an external zip drive. I need a zip drive because that's where my portfolio is saved. :\
