Need Some Opinions on Routers

Hey all. Just recently, my family got a new router. It worked fine for a while but I'm starting to experience problems with it. As of right now, there are 4 computers and an xbox connected. At any given time two or three might actually be using the internet. Before having this router, we had a U.S. Robotics one that worked great but didn't have the range to reach my Dad's office.

I'm looking for something that will perform well with multiple people surfing/gaming and not experience too much of a slow down. At this point, I'm really not sure what I should be looking for. Does anyone know of a router that could fit my criteria? All suggestions are welcome.

EDIT: It's an older generation Belkin N600 (exterior isn't the same) hooked up to Comcast 12 mpbs connection. I'm not sure if it matters or not, but it's a two story house with the majority of the computers on the second floor and the router on the first floor. Is there another way to extend the connection to make it stronger upstairs?

Thanks in advance

You need a router with external antennaes to get better reception. It's wireless G but I highyl recommend this router here.

And if you really want to extend your wireless, you can get 2 of these and hook up them together with a ethernet cable.

Or you can try using the range extender and buy only one router if you can't run a cable between the 2.

Sometimes this device works well and other times it don't from what I hear.

I have the newer generation Play N600 Wireless Dual-Band N+ Router, on the second floor of my house, with 3 computers connected wirelessly, one through ethernet, and one Ipod Touch. And a Nintendo DS. In my users manual for this router, the router does not have external antannae, but, it does have a "High Gain Position" with the internal antannae, where it broadcasts most of the signal forward, and some of it around the router. I'm quite amazed with the routers performance. Got it at Walmart, and it has a 2 year warranty on it, standard. Beat my old D-Link, but I don't like to play favorites. They're all quite equal.

I'm running two routers now; a Cisco/Linksys e3000 and a Buffalo WHR-54G. The routers are side by side but I still tend to get better range using the Buffalo and it's single external antenna.

I do like John's suggestion. Those old Linksys routers are very difficult to beat. Load it up with DD-WRT and purchase a couple high gain antennas and you shouldn't have any problems with range.

Or if you really want to get fancy, it's quite easy to run routers in conjunction with DD-WRT. You could even grab a few older WRT54G routers (I think pre-version 5) and load DD-WRT on them then have them spread about the house.
