Need some opinions on the X700 Pro

Awhile ago, I made a topic about the 9800. Unfortunately, when I went to the store they had no more and won't be getting anymore. I decided to wait for around Christmas to see what would happen.

I then found this card on clearance. I'm not too good with video cards so could someone rate this one?

Is it good for its price? Is there a better card for that price(available in Canada)?

Thanks.

I was looking over the options for cards there and at memoryexpress.com and sad to say the X800 and especially the X850 models would ring circles around the X700. The X850 AGP card was a gaming card there while the all-in-wonder 9700 won awards for gaming reviews.

have the X700 Pro, and I am quite happy with it. There are times where I wish I had a better card, but if your not a hardcore gamer than it's certainly more than enough. Look in the screenshot contest thread and look for my posts, then you'll see what kind of graphics it can put out.

i have one, but i don't play games.....

i've played some doom3 with it, and ran an n64 emulator and ps2 emulators with 1024x1280 and full antialiasing, and it ran at full speed

i doubt it would run the newest games at full res. such as half life 2 and newer, but for occasional gaming, it's fine

come to think of it, mine isn't even a pro

it's just the regular..........

my computer originally came with a different card, and it fried (actually i accidently used a grill ignitor on it) and they upgraded me to the x700.

it's a good entry level pci-e

Actually I can run half life 2 on max settings at 1280x1024 with ~ 40-50FPS. I can also runs games like COD2 and FEAR at max settings at 1024x768.

i have the card, its ok, it ran pretty hot with the stock cooler (60c at idle), now it runs 33c at idle with a zalman vf900. it hasnt overclocked too well, i've at about 16% overclock and it is still kind of unstable. im kinda suprised by my hl2 framerate (this is while it is overclocked), about 38fps with hl2 on max settings at a resolution of 1920x1200. its not bad, but not the nest for gaming.

Hm....I don't know about that.
Especially FEAR and COD2. By max settings you mean AA and AF all the way up to 4/6X and 16X? I had some stutter even on my old 7800GTX (at 1280x1024)...

I'm far from sure on what frame rates when having HL2 set here at 1280x1024 with the highest available settings. But I'm working with an X1300 Pro PCI-E card everyone claims is bad news for gaming. One the last build the Radeon 9550 was getting some great reviews for the AGP card used then. But the 9800 Pro and X series cards were the ones to go with. The X1300 AGP model does see good reports while the X850 was a gaming model.

Here the only game seeing any stutter(card not even oced) is Soldier of Fortune II where it freezes up for about 30seconds when grabbing a screen or a steady ambient game sound is heard. Game flaw there. With HL2, 007Nightfire, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Metal of Honor, and a few others they run a little smoother then with the 9550 AGP model along with the boost in system memory between cases. You can have the best card out but if the memory is less then desired...:(

AA at 4X and Anistropic filtering(there is no higher option than anistropic)

See for yourself

??? I Half Life 2 is one of the most easiest games to MAX out. I did it with just a GeForce 6200 and ran fine.

The max resolution for HL2 and many other games is 1280x1024. This is mainly due to being lcd monitor friendly. Some of the older style games still see a 1024x768 max. The X700 should have no problems running games at 1280x1024. The better performance would be seen with a newer model lilke the X850 line. For AGP models that was the gamer's card from ATI to follow the 9700 all-in-wonder model.

They can go much higher then that, it's just that if you dont have a monitor that can support over 1280x1024, it wont show up in the list of compatible resolutions.
