i just loaded windows xp home edition on my acer aspire because its the only OS i could get my hands on. anyway. it doesnt recognize my wireless modem or let me connect through an ethernet cable either. does anybody know how i can get it to turn on my wirless modem. i really needa get this laptop up and running by wednesday so it can be ready for school.]

go to acer's support site and download the necessary drivers for that model, when installed with XP...easy as pie
 
Have you tried rebooting your modem? This is often a missed step when setting up a new client on a network.

You should be able to connect to the modem via ethernet, what is the make/model of your modem?
