Need tips on how to use an old hard drive

Hello. I am new here and i have an old good hard drive that i want to put in my bare bones kit. The hard drive in the kit is toast and i dont have funds to buy another.
I tried booting other hard drives that i have. The computer will recognize that it is there but it wont boot.
Is there a way to get it to boot or am i just beating a dead horse?
Any tips are greatly appreciated.

You will not be able to boot into windows if its installed on the drive you are trying to use as windows was installed while in a different machine. You will need to do a fresh install of windows.

Thanks for the tip.

do i use the cd drive to insall it?
Will the disk drive boot when powered up?
Will the re-install take up more space or replace the existing?
sorry for all the inquiries but i am pulling my hair out (whats left of it)

You will need to delete existing partitions, repartition and then install windows. Use the cd drive with the windows install cd in it to install windows. Make sure you set the cd rom drive as first boot device in the bios menu.

Yes, so if you have data on there you need then back it up to a different drive first.

Dont have anything i cant live without.
So in a nut shell...
I set the cd drive as first boot and then the windows installer will give me access to erase the hard drive and re install it for my PC?

My Nephew is going to bring a CD tomorrow. not sure what it is but he knows his way around PCs...at least more than I do.
Im just looking at a no cost way to get mine up and running again so i dont have to use this dinosaur anymore. i am out of work and all the career sites crawl along on this thing.
