Need to get new build to recognize CD/DVD

Hello, I am trying to boot up with a new Motherboard/CPU/Memory
upgrade with a previously installed Hard Drive with XP Home (ServicePack2).
I am supposed to Re-Setup/Install Windows again to allow the new Motherboard
to load appropriate drivers etc. right? So
I made some Start-up floppy's that I downloaded and I get a message
that the CD player/burner isn't recognized.
I know that this happens often with new builds. How do I set it up?

AMD Athlon 5600+ AM2 dual core, ECS GeForce6100SM :( with only one
IDE interface with the Hard Drive on it as Master. The DVD/CD Burner is on a PCI card (SIIG UltraATA 133) which supports earlier versions and IS Recognized by the Bios- just not the CD/DVD burner. Dual channel 2 gig Patriot memory.

Did you go into the bio's and make sure that the cd/dvd burner is set as the 1st boot device? If not, then do so.

If your hard drive already has an OS on it, then you might not need the start up floppy disks, just put the OS disk in the drive, and boot. It should detect the drive (if it is set as the 1st boot device) and you should be able to reformat and reinstall the OS.

Do not make the mistake of doing a repair installation, you really need to reformat and reinstall the OS.


EDIT: After re reading your post, try setting your cd/dvd burner as the slave on your IDE cable, and do not use the PCI adaptor right now. You can change it later if you want to.

So, the HDD as master and the CD/DVD as slave on the same cable.

Thank you for your reply Paratwa. I was thinking about trying
putting both HDD and CD burner on the same cable to the IDE
Motherboard slot. People on this forum have said not to do that
however, and that is why I didn't try that. I would rather not
have to reformat if I can help it because there are some files
that I have not backed-up yet- Maybe I'll learn someday to
keep up on this especially when changing Hardware. Thanks again.

Doing that is perfectly fine! I have put HDD and CD on the same cable and nothing happened! Where you got that, I have no idea, but ignore that. It's perfectly fine.
 
You know what, I don't think I did get that idea here-
believe it or not, I think it was in the manual of the
Motherboard or maybe another forum. I know I read
it somewhere and I assumed it was here because of
all the time I spent here recently. Okay, I will give
it a try tonight. Thanks
I am however, nervous that I may have a bigger problem in
that I get a very quick blue screen error message that
I can't read. I tried filming it with a digital camera, but
the image on each frame is crap. I hope it is the same message
I got during the startup disc run. Everything seems generally okay though.

BSOD? Ok. Fine! Might be bad memory. And I'm pretty sure it didn't come from the manual, no manual would possible say that.
 
You are right, it wasn't the mobo manual but the add on PCI adapter card that said it.
quote "do not mix Ultra ATA/133 hard disk with slower IDE or ATAPI devices on same channel" I guess speed is the factor involved here. That wouldn't have been a problem anyway because there are 2 slots for IDE hookups on the adapter anyway. This could just have been a recommendation for all I know.
I haven't done anything yet with the computer and will soon as I have more time tonight.
I hope everything will work now and am not asking you guys for more help later. It's nice to know that there are people like yourselves willing to help here. Thanks again.
 
Okay guys, the Hard drive is formatting as I type this. I had a Seagate Barracuda
40 gig Hard Drive lying around that I originally bought on fleabay for music recording on a tascam stand alone unit that I am doing a fresh install on right now. I will later
upgrade this hard drive (ATA 100) or put my original HD back in after this install.
It is a good feeling to have everything go well on a new build even after assuming
that there could have been problems with the Mobo as there often is. I am a very happy camper. I just took my time over a few days and asked a few questions
and tried not to jump to too many conclusions. Thanks guys. I'll be around here
often watching you dudes on this forum...and on my new Computer!

I'm sure their basically saying that if you mix slower drives with faster drives, your speed would be reduced. As long as you don't go use an 16x CD Drive with an ATA133 250GB, your fine (You can mix but slower speeds :cool:)
 
You need a foreign translator for some manuals. They probably meant
"this computer may not blo up for speed exchanging. check Motherbeard
docimentaltation".:D
