Need to get Xubuntu installation back

Hey guys, I have Xubuntu 11.10 installed on a 100GB partition, and last night I attempted to install windows on a 120GB partition. Well, the dual boot didn't work, since I didn't have windows installed first, and then windows didn't have any wifi drivers and I had no other computer to download them from, so I just formatted and deleted the partition drive. Now I can't get my Xubuntu back. I tried going into Gparted and changing the partition to boot, but that had no effect. Tried "upgrading" from the same 11.10 Xubuntu disk, but it didn't give me that option. I can see the files I need, but I'm at school right now and don't have an external. I have a windows disk, xubuntu disk, and Gparted with me. Any ideas?

Since that's all you have, boot into the Xbuntu live disk.
Open gparted if need be and find the name of the drive with Xbuntu on it. (I'm hoping the live disk of Xbuntu has gparted installed)
Should be /dev/sda, /dev/sdb, etc
If it doesn't have gparted installed, you can run this command in the terminal instead:
Code:
sudo fdisk -l

Open up a terminal type
Code:
sudo grub-install /dev/sda
Substitute /dev/sda with whichever drive it's on.

For future note, if you do it this way, you can then do a
Code:
sudo update-grub
and it will find windows and update grub accordingly.

That should be all you need to do. :good:

Cool, cool, thanks. But I did uninstall windows, would that matter at all? I just need to access my notes in my next class, that's why I'm not waiting till I get home.

Removing windows has no effect. But if you did have windows installed, this would let you overwrite the mbr and allow grub to be setup properly for the dual boot.
