need to replace my gpu's

I currentyl run 2 9800gtx's in sli and they are starting to fail. I need to replace them.

What single card would give me similar or better berformance that the 2 i have but not cost me a fortune.
 
I would think you need to go with atleast a GTX 285 or 295 to get better performance then your current setup.

Yeah, what's leading you to think that they're failing? I would think that a GTX 285 SLI setup would be a pretty good cost-effective solution too, but I just checked Newegg and - Poof! Gone. The only high-end new Nvidia cards they have are Fermis. Not everyone wants to pay $1000+ for an SLI setup (+ the very probable cost for a new 1200w power supply.) Really, Newegg? No high-end GTX 200 series? You could still look on ebay, though.

Of course, if you want to maintain your current performance, I'm sure just one GTX 285 (Or for a more power a 295) would do. You could also go for something from the Radeon 5xxx series. There's a wide array of cards in that series now.
