Need to upgrade GPU from my HD6950 2gb

Hey I have a few questions about upgrading my GPU. Here are my PC specs.

HD6950

What I want. SLI, I dont know if I should buy a single high end card and add another later or get 2x lower end cards. I prefer to have 4gb cards, possible triple monitor set up.

I would rather not break my wallet so what do you guys think? Will a 3.0 PCI card work in my 2.0 PCI with the Phenom II CPU?

Im running a 1080p monitor but looking to upgrade to a triple set up later on

Im mostly playing BF3, MOH warfighter, DiRT 2 and 3, VERY heavily modded skyrim (Destroys my 6950, Iv'e maxed out the 2gb ram a few times) and a few others.
I will be getting watch dogs and tom clancys division if it gets released on PC.

Pcie 2 and 3 are compatible, but you dont want to run a new card on 2.0x4 which is what your second slot is. Fou multi monitors and what youplay, you'll need to spend everything you can on a single uber-card like a 780 or titan if you can. Not sure if a 690 will work at full potential n 2.0x16 though.
 
Yeah i just found out it dousn't support SLI. May be possible bit a real hassle.

Im leaning towerds a single 760 for now. I have plans for a whole new build. All i Really need is a better card to hold me up until my next build. So i could get the 760 for now then another for the new PC to SLI them.
