You're talking old school on the line out to sound card in. That was typical on older models where you patched to the line in jack in order to record sound. Now the average tv tuner card will simply record it all from an analog source since those have pvrs in the software they come with.

Having bought a new card a month before Vista's release the XP MCE software wouldn't even install on Vista. That was the AVerMedia MCE 1500 -pro tuner card there. Renamed from Ultra TV to AVerTV the A180 MCE model works like a charm on Vista as well as XP while now lacking the Cyberlink software that came with even another strictly capture card that never worked.

The A180 is seen OEM for $75 at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815100021 For the retail box that is seen for a just over $80 at http://www.mwave.com/mwave/viewspec.hmx?scriteria=3697939

For monitoring sound that would then come from your sound card's output. Ive been running AVerMedia while others go for ADS or Haugepauge.

ive had an ATI TV Wonder200 for about 8 months now, and it works perfectly :)
it came with the drivers CD and the catalyst media center...i hooked up my DirecTv box up to it with S-video and full sound and i can record via scheduling the record task to a certain time, and i can also burn the media to a cd/dvd right from the CMC. its quite amazing:P
that and i can let my friends watch TV over various instant messaging programs because the programs see it as somewhat of a webcam i suppose :P

All you will get from a vcr with that one is Analog Video only! Note the lack of two audio input jacks seen in the photo.

The driver is what to go by there. Since MCE is still XP I used the AVerMedia 1500 MCE card on both Pro and Home versions while not getting anywhere in Vista. The A180 lacks the Cyberlink PowerDirector package that came with a capture only card but worked on the last tuner card.

The Windows MM feature is something I never use. Despite the tuner driver released for the last card here I know Media Center in Vista still failed to see the card. The WMM in Vista totally fails to see the new card while the software for the card itself clearly detects the input source.

WMM is mainly for existing media on the drive itself you browse through folder for. You first have to capture the video onto the drive through a device or have WMM detect a digital camera connected to the system.
