.NET Framework - have multiple installed, can I uninstall?

I'm running Win XP and I'm looking at the list of programs in the add remove programs list, and I have listed there:

Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP 1

Now, I don't even know what NET Framework is, I presume its some basic support for the OS, that's why I'm putting it in this forum. So, do I need this thing?

I presume I don't need all 3 of them at least, right, I can uninstall the previous versions?
 
Certain applications use .NET Framework. And different applications use different versions. Unlike patches, the older versions are not integrated into the newest versions, so just leave all of them installed.
