Im experimenting as i speak.
I've installed this router connecting my desktop and the 'infamous' laptop !!:P
When i go to the router admin i block some sites + some keywords.
The keywords i used was : sex,porn & mp3
the only site i blocked was : http://www.yahoo.com

now when i go in google i type in any keywords, i get the page which reads "site blocked by netgear firewall". so this one worked out.

Now when i go to yahoo page it's not blocked.below is what i used in the netgear keywords for blocking:
www.yahoo.com
http://yahoo.com
yahoo
yahoo.com

and a lots more. Why is this router not blocking yahoo ?

note that i also Blocked http://www.computerforum.com and it worked but yahoo won't..WHY ?

(ps : i didn't block CF cause i wanted to, i was just testing..lol)
 
i've tried IP addresses but they don't work. what cna i do now cause only limited stuff can get block. also can i upgrade the firmware ?
 
ok so i got it now. to block sites you either have to put :

yahoo or .yahoo or .google

i didn't restart my browser and some changes require you to reboot your pc.
lol.am still a noob in network security..lol
my mistake.

Now where can i get a list off black listed sites ?

If you want a Blacklist then go to http://urlblacklist.com/

Banning IPs doesnt work with Router filters unless it says 'Ban IP' if its just a filter then its the words used in the URL itslef that are banned.

E.g. (All these sites are fictional, im making them up if they are real i am sorry)
You put a filter on the word 'Porn':
www . pornworld . com - Blocked
www . welikeporn . com - Blocked

Just say you did a Ping on the first website and its Ip was 111.111.111.111
If you put: http://111.111.111.111 into the web browser, the router cannot see the word 'Porn' in it and so it is not blocked

So If you put the IP address into the filter, the router is looking for the IP address in the address bar, but if you dont type the IP address into the browser then it wont block it!

(note : this thread will only be used on the weekends cos these are the 2 days i stop all my downloads and start experimenting..lol)
