Hello guys,

I hope what I am asking does make sense. I was reading up about the Cat6 Ethernet Cables. I was wondering since I have the Netgear WPN824v2 and the Netgear GA311 NIC would it give me better passage for my internet if I use a Cat6 cable instead of a Cat5 cable. I am sorry if this is a dumb question. I am just curious even if I use a Cat5 cable would the internet go slower to my computer. I hope this make sense but if it doesn't just ignore this. Thank you in advance.

There is no dumb question, just dumb answers. Cat6 is the standard when using Gigabit Ethernet that's 1000Mbit. What you have is a 1000Mbit card, and a 100Mbit Router. Using a Cat6 might help with a loss of packets since it is shielded better than Cat5. Will you notice a difference? Only if your Cat5 cable your currently using has been abused, by kinking, cutting, etc.

Think of your internet connection (10 Mbit at the best) as a soda fountain dispenser stream, as it stands right now, your using that dispenser with a pipe that is a foot in diameter. That still has a ton of room in the pipe before it could ever be limited by the pipe itself. Increasing your bandwidth to Gigabit, would be like using the same soda fountain through the Alaskan pipeline! Sure there would be more room, but it's still the same amount coming out of that soda fountain.

I hope that made sense. It does to me, but that's not saying much. :D

do note that both CAT5e and CAT6 support 1000mbit connections

cat5e is gigabit @ 100mhz

cat6 is gigabit @ 250mhz
 
Thank you for your reply. I am going to find some cables and see if my connection improve a lil better. The cables are very old. Been like 3 years. Maybe the cables has smalls cuts or something i don't know about.
