Network and Sharing

Hi people
Sorry if this sounds like a pretty stupid question, but I,m new at this.
I'm running vista and I'm connected to the internet fine. But the network and sharing icon says 'not connected', 'wireless networks are available'. What gives? So, the connection doesn't show up in network and sharing centre, so I can't hit the customize button and change profile from 'public' to 'private', which is what i want to do.
Any ideas on why its not seeing my internet connection? Or how I can change my setting to private from public without going into internet and sharing center?
Thanks

Welcome to the forum prez! We'll try to get this sorted out with you.

How are you connected to the internet? If you are connected via an Ethernet cable, then what you are seeing is just the WiFi connection letting you know that it is up and unconnected. It is also seeing networks you could join. If you do not want to use the WiFi connection on your computer, you can disable it in the Network Connections control panel or just turn off the radio.

The easiest way to change your connected network's security settings from Private to Public is through the Network and Sharing Center.
