Network Boot?

Greetings to everyone!! I have a problem in figuring out how to perform a windows xp re-installation on my Compaq Armada e500 laptop. The problem is that the Multibay DVD rom isn't working for whatever reason? I have my laptop networked to my pc, with all the drives being shared. The network is up and runnign fine. Its a dell Dimension 8200. The laptop has an Intel PRO/100 + MiniPCI network card and my dell has a Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet card. Can anyone help me in getting windows xp re-installed on my laptop using my CD-ROM drive on my dell?? thankzz in advance!

I dont think you can. What are you using to connect the 2 together? Is it connected to a router? a Crossover cable? Have you tried a Zip drive or a thumbdrive to boot from? You can copy your Windows CD onto it. Another thing is if you haven't formated the laptop drive yet, I would partition it and copy the Windows CD onto the second drive, make a bootable floppy disk, restart, when you're at the dos prompt just run "setup" on the D drive.

I'm using a crossover cable to connect both machines! I could try that but i read some info stating you can perform installation across a network. The reason for this is that i want to both re-install windows xp and install slackware linux also. So I was wondering if anyone can shed sum light on how I can go about doing this!

Well it's gotten more complicated now. Without a CDrom, I dont think you can get it to install a dual boot system over the network. I would just get another CD drive to cut out all the headaches. Or if your system can boot off a thumb drive, that may be pretty easy, since you can buy up to 4gb thumbdrives now. But the easiest route is to get a new CD rom whether its internal or external (that can work with dos or non-windows software for bootup).
