Network computer wont connect to INET

Hi, My regular computer went belly up so I am trying to use an old box I inherited from work until I get a new one. The thing works fine and says I am connected but I am not able to connect to the internet on it. Its an XP OS and I have a DSL line for an ISP. I am currently using my laptop to write this on the same internet service but wirelessly as I also have a wireless router. The troubled box is direct wired to the router.
The best clue I have is that this was once part of a work network.I have tried a few things but nothing is working.I am no expert but I do know my way around
windows machines.Would appreciate any help you may give! Thanks in advance for your input. :o Jeff

The first thing to check is whether or not the router is assigning you an IP address. Go to Start-->Run type in 'cmd' ,<enter> and at the command prompt type 'ipconfig', <enter>

Depending on your router setup, you should see an IP address similar to '192.168.1.102' if the router has assigned you one.

If you do have a valid IP address, try typing 'ping google.com', <enter> at the command prompt. If you are connected to the internet, you should get several replies from a google IP address.

If you do, then the issue must be software related. I would uninstall or disable any firewalls or security software on at a time until you can identify the culprit.

If you DO NOT get a valid IP from the router or a response from Google, then the problem may be with your router or your NIC. Please post back with your results and we'll take it from there.

Firstly Thanks for your help! I did NOT get a reply...actually I did get a reply stating Ping reply could not find host google.com
