Network connections hang on startup

Hi All,

I've recently had a bit of trouble, when my XP MCE SP2 Compaq PC boots, everything loads except for the wireless network connection. then when i go into start menu, settings, network connections, the start menu and taskbar hangs for up to about 5 minutes, at which point it eventually loads and continues as normal. I'm using Windows to connect to the router rather than the 3rd party Netgear software (although it still happens if i use the Netgear program)

im using a netgear wireless router and a WG111T usb adapter, but ive also tried using an ethernet cable with my built in ethernet card to connect to the router and the situation is the same. I used to run a BT Voyager wired usb modem and didnt have a problem up to that point.

ive tried all the latest windows updates and articles, checked for spyware/viruses etc.

please could anyone help with any suggestions?? My spec is as follows

Compaq Presario PC, Windows XP MCE, 2.4gHz Core 2 Duo processor
2GB DDR2 RAM
250GB HDD
nVidia GeForce 7500LE GPU
Realtek 7.1 HD Audio Card

thanks very much!

Hi TLarkin,

I tired this program and the first time i booted everything was fine, but it soon returned to the hang! It's now a bit intermittent, ive tried enabling and disabling the welcome screen, starting up without a password etc.

In fact when i start without a password i get the hang before my desktop appears. ie it hangs on a blank screen with mouse pointer.

Could it be related to my startup programs? for example Zonealarm, AVG??

Thanks again
Adam

so the computer just freezes randomly?

That is a very broad problem? What does the event viewer say under the error logs?

You can try booting your system up holding down the shift key, this will disable all start up items. Does your computer run smoothly then?

Also, I just thought, do you have any usb devices plugged in at boot? If you halts on the blinking cursor it could be attempting to boot from a USB device. My PC at home does this when my external Lacie drive is hooked up to it when rebooting.

absolutely no problems at all once the computer boots up, everythings super fast. its lieterally just on startup, i never lose connection from my router or anything.

at time of writing of my first post i was not using the welcome screen and was using a password. the blank screen hang happens when i dont use the welcome screen and dont use a password (ie auto login). i thought maybe when i was using the password i was hitting enter before the network connections had time to "load" (or not!) which meant it was happening after the desktop appeared.
whereas now it essentially logs in in its own time, so the hang happens before the desktop? does that make sense?

the only ideas i had was the order of my startup items (firewall blocking connections for some reason??) or maybe something to do with AOL using a dynamic IP and it taking so long to acquire it??

cheers

sorry i missed that,

i do have usb devices, but no storage devices or anything, heres a list of what i have:

Microsoft intellipoint USB mouse
Trust 360 spacecam
Oxygen 8 V2 MIDI controller (but that's switched off on boot)

the hang is later than the blinking course or DOS style screens, its when the mouse pointer appears, just before the taskbar comes up. Up until that point everythings usually pretty speedy...

thanks!

hmmm it is hard to say, perhaps windows explorer or the loginwindow is intermittently crashing. I would run standard maintenance on your system, maybe run a chkdsk /r from the command line, reboot your computer and let it try to rebuild the system.

Other than that you could use trial and error. Unplug all extra peripherals on your system and see if its some sort of funky driver problem.
